WILLIAM B. HOWARD
TEAM PHYSICIAN AWARD
This award, in memory of Dr. William H. B. “Bill” Howard, an iconic figure in Baltimore’s and Maryland’s distinguished sports medicine community, is presented to a physician who like Dr. Howard, exemplifies what it truly means to be a team physician.
For nearly four decades, Dr. Howard, who is considered by many to be the “Father of Union Memorial Sports Medicine,” cared for athletes of all ages, athletic abilities and endeavors. A lifelong athlete himself, he loved caring for athletes! He was a teacher, friend, clinician, athlete, intellectual and innovator. Fiercely independent in thought and action, he was known for his frankness and decisiveness. Dr. Howard possessed a tireless work ethic and was strongly committed in his role as team physician. Available day or night to athletic trainers in need of assistance, you could count on him to respond, and he would meet them personally at his office or ER or arrange for someone at Union Memorial Hospital to address those needs. On game days you would find him on the sidelines, dressed in his jeans, work boots, team wear, but not wearing a coat & tie. Furthermore, he would arrive at games in his trusty black Ford pickup, with his beloved dog in the front seat, whether in or out of state to fulfill his team physician responsibility. He was truly a Renaissance man and epitomized what it meant to be a “Team Physician.”
